PrestaShop software is first of all a core containing the main functionalities. More functionalities can be added on this base thanks to modules (also called plugins, extensions, or addons).
on which various functionalities can be added by installing extensions called modules, plugins, or addons.
Some modules can be said to be "native", as they are already integrated into any PrestaShop store, and don't need to be purchased and added. To find out more about the module principle itself, take a look at our dedicated article!
Access to modules
The "Module Manager" page in the "Modules" menu gives you access to the list of addons.
This list lets you quickly find the module you want. You can also enter the name of the module you're looking for in the search box.
Filter modules
Several filtering options are available:
- By function category
- By status enabled/disabled and installed/uninstalled
Manage modules
You can use certain actions module by module, or in groups.
Actions available:
- Configure: Some modules feature a configuration page. In this case, they display a "Configure" link to access a new interface, from which you can adjust their settings.
- Enable/Disable: When installed, a module is enabled by default. You can disable it, which will remove its options from your back-office, but retain its settings for possible reactivation.
- Enable/Disable on mobile: This action will disable the module's front-office view for mobile devices (smartphones, etc.).
- Install/Uninstall: This action deploys or remove the basic configuration of a module.
- Reset: Default settings will be restored, as if the module had just been installed. Please note that only "Administrator" profiles can perform a reset.
- Delete: This option is only available in grouped actions. It will delete all the files and folders of the module, which will then no longer be available at all on your back-office.
A confirmation pop-up will be displayed when you choose an irreversible action. When uninstalling, you are also offered the option of deleting the module folder.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between disabling, uninstalling and deleting?
If you no longer wish to use a module, you can disable, uninstall or delete it. The result of these actions looks like it's all the same: the module is not active, its options no longer appear in your back-office, and any elements it may have added to the front-office disappear.
But the difference is significant:
- When a module is disabled, its configuration is preserved, so that it can be recovered when it is reactivated.
- Uninstalling retains the module, but deletes its configuration data.
- Deletion removes the module's files from your software, making it disappear from the Module Manager list. It will have to be uploaded again if you wish to re-install it.
It is therefore advisable to uninstall and/or delete a module only if you no longer need its data, or if you are certain you will no longer use it.
You can always add a module to your site again, either directly from your back office, or via the PrestaShop Marketplace.
Where can I find modules?
Your back office normally features a Marketplace area from which you can directly obtain and install modules. If this is not the case, you can install the PrestaShop Marketplace module in your Back Office.
The Marketplace website is also a good place to find a wide range of modules. Read our article on how it works.
