The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard protocol for sending or downloading files on a network. This is the system generally used to upload the files of a PrestaShop store to the web host's web server, and thus make the website available on the internet.
What is an FTP access?
These are the identifiers that allow you to access the files of the server on which your PrestaShop site is hosted.
⚠️ Caution, logging into your FTP and intervening on the files requires certain technical skills. |
How to find this access?
Several solutions allow you to regain your FTP access:
- When opening an offer with a host, you will create or obtain access, which it is advisable to back up on your side.
- It is also possible to ask your hosting provider's support to send you these accesses or to generate new ones.
- On the administration interface of your server, it is possible to consult, redefine or create new FTP access. The exact terms will vary depending on the chosen host. You can see an example of FTP access management with the Gandi host in this article: Installing a PrestaShop store with the Gandi host.
Good practices
- It is recommended to provide specific access to each stakeholder on the server, such as an agent for technical support. This makes it easy to remove the rights after the end of the intervention.
- You will often need several different identifiers to manage your PrestaShop store in detail: FTP access, database access, back-office access, etc. It is therefore preferable to keep these different accesses stored in a password manager.
💡 With a Hosted store you do not have access to FTP files, and therefore do not need to have the identifiers. |
