Computer security should be a top priority for anyone surfing the web. Let's take a look at how to deal with a very common risk.
What is phishing?
This is a scam technique that uses emails impersonating a trusted third party to steal personal data, such as login details, passwords, credit card numbers, and so on.
Example of phishing: you receive an email purporting to be from PrestaShop asking you to open an attachment or click on a link, failing which your store will be promptly closed.
How can you spot a phishing attempt?
There are several things to look for when identifying a phishing attempt:
- Is there consistency between the email address and the company?
Example: email sent by contact@shppresta.com (not @prestashop.com)
- If you are asked to click on a button or hyperlink and position your mouse over it, is there consistency between the hyperlink and the company?
Example: hyperlink to a website shop.boom.com prestashop.com
- Is this a regular request?
- Are there any spelling or syntax errors?
- Are you being asked to carry out an urgent action?
What action to take?
- If you have entered your login and/or password, immediately change the password and check what harmful actions may have been performed on your account.
- Report the email as "phishing" in your inbox.
- If you have any doubts about an email that seems to come from PrestaShop, please don't hesitate to contact us.
