PrestaShop 8 offers a discount management system based on two main mechanisms: cart rules and catalog price rules.
1. Cart Rules
Cart rules are discounts that are applied at checkout, often in the form of promo codes or automatic offers. When creating a cart rule, the interface offers three main tabs:
- Information: name, description, visibility, promo code, etc.
- Conditions: customer eligibility, restrictions (customer groups, currencies, carriers, countries), minimum purchase, applicable products, etc.
- Actions: type of discount (percentage, fixed amount, free shipping, free product), application on the cart or specific products, combinability with other promotions, etc.
Example: a store can create a "WELCOME10" rule that offers a 10% discount and free shipping to new customers for their first order.
2. Catalog Price Rules
Catalog price rules allow you to automatically apply discounts to sets of products defined by criteria (category, brand, supplier, attributes, etc.). Unlike cart rules, they do not require a promo code and are applied directly to the displayed price of the relevant products.
The conditions are configurable and allow you, for example, to target all products in a given category or from a specific manufacturer, for a given period, and to adjust the discount based on the quantity purchased (tiered pricing).
Example: apply -10% on all t-shirts from brand X from July 1 to July 15, or offer a free item for the purchase of three products from a specific category.
